The Resurection of K-Pop Girl Groups: Who's Got the Right Stuff!!
For the past couple of years now I have started noticing the increasing amount of girl groups popping out !! Not since the SES,F.inkl and Baby Vox days have I seen such madness!! It started when SM launched the female version of TVXQ (at least in my opinion) Cheon Sang Ji Hee!! Though they really never had as big of a success in Korea but they did well in Japan. Then a few years later groups such as Baby Vox R.ev, Wonder Girls and Girls Generation launched into the scene with such impact that the mostly male dominated idol genre has been changed!! Here is an objective look at some of the more well known Girl Groups now and how they fare against each other!~
1. The Wonder Girls
The Wonder Girls crept into the scene with the song Irony which was so refreshing to see! Not only was the beat seducing enough to the ears but we also heard the potential as to what the girls can do!! Then comes the hit that Skyrocketed them to stardom, Tell Me. This song was viral. Everyone seems to be infected, from the catchy hook to the dance steps, you could not go anywhere without hearing or seeing the Tell Me Syndrome! Then they went on to produce more hits that rivaled Tell Me, such as the vanity filled anthem, So Hot to the Retro vibe of Nobody. These girls are a force to be reckon with!
Although we saw their singing potential early on, songs like Tell Me and So Hot doesn't really showcase what they can do! Sun Ye and Ye Eun can hold their own and so can Yoobin (just because she mostly raps) but Sohee and Sunmi are a different case! Sunmi had a lot of potential earlier on but it seems that the growth I was expecting from her has been stagnant, as she sounds the same as when she started. Sohee on the other hand seems to be in reverse! She started out strong but as time goes by she seems to be having dificulty in hitting right notes and on pitch! Sohee has such a unique voice, though not exactly the strongest but if you trained her as a more stylized singer i think it would seriously benefit the Wonder Girls as a group! It seemed that to mask these shortcomings, they had to rely more on concepts and repetetive catchy hooks to keep them afloat! There is nothing wrong with doing conceptual ideas or catchy hooks but to establish yourself as a serious artist you just cant rely on gimicks but also some more creative and revolutionary ideas on top crafting your skills are important!! Now we see these coming forth with the release of thier latest mini album . Not only did they show us that they are striving and improoving but one of the girls also composed, arranged and wrote one of the songs in the album! Will we get to see them evolving more in the future I should hope so!!
2. Girls Generation
From SM entertainment comes the female version of Super Junior, Girls Generation. Now we all know that SM produces hit makers that are sure fire hits and these girls are no exception! Should I even name all thier hit songs? I shouldn't haha there is too much!! But the more memorable ones are Girls Generation, Kissing you and their latest Gee! Although they've had so much hits on their belt it seems like they hadn't had an impact yet as suppose to the Wonder Girls! Their latest hit Gee however is turning into another viral craze, and i can see it as the song that will launch them ahead of the Wonder Girls for the first half of the year!
Girls Generation consists of 9 members!! In my opinion it's a lot of members for me to keep track!! The strongest vocalists in the group would be Tae Yeon and Jessica, with Tiffany trailing behind! What makes G.G. so great is that their live is always good! But that's not to say there aren't weak links in the group! Yoona, So Yooung and HyeoYeon seems to always struggle in my opinion! Though they're the three best dancers I find that they're not always up to par with the rest of the girls vocally! Yoona i find is a better actress than she is a singer, Hyeo Yeon seems to be just relying on the dancing skills and So Young i feel is just a filler! There seems to be a lot of people against them which i find really insane!! But nonetheless, being under SM can guarantee you a long career beyond and past leaving this group!
3.Kara
Kara is the underdog of the three Girlgroups right now! I thought that they were great when they started with Break it!! It was something utterly different from what the other girls were doing, i find and plus Sung Hee had such marvelous voice!! But unfortunately they lost Sung Hee as a member! So they opted to replace her with 2 girls!
Kara hasnt been the same since member Sung Hee left! They decided to go generic and bland! With Rock You and Pretty Girl I find that they're trying to hard to compete with other girl groups! Since Sung hee left their vocal has been mediocre as they chose two girls that doesn't even compare to what the previous member can do which is really sad! Their dancing skills aren't very strong either! And the song Pretty Girl is a bad case of never mix English with Korean!
